Rambo Santa

http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/12/26/santa.shooting/index.html?eref=rss_topstories

Can you imagine? You're 8 years old, running to answer the door bell and "OMG it's SANTA!!!" Then Santa takes a semi-automatic pistol and shoots you in the face. I can't even begin to comprehend the amount of therapy this little girl will go through once she recovers from her injury. There goes her belief in the Easter Bunny...

Proposal and Acceptance

As George has yet to tire of mentioning, I do indeed have better news than my last post. Most people are already aware, but in case you missed the memo, George and I are now engaged! For those who need better details than "I proposed and she said yes," I'll fill you here. If you want the short and sweet version visit George's site.

About 8 months ago I gave George photos of ring styles that I like and dislike to help him search for a ring. He wanted explanations and examples, very nerd-like! Well, he managed to find the site online of the photo I had marked as my favorite, contacted the designer and drove 2 hrs to Nashville to purchase the ring!

The day of my birthday while I was on the phone with my little brother, George called my father and asked for permission. My dad happened to be driving at the time, couldn't understand George and told him he had the wrong number. George managed to get his point across, my dad gave his permission and thus the awkward conversation (because my father is socially inept) was concluded.

That night we went to The Jazz Factory in Huntsville, this fabulous old restaurant with live Jazz and great food. The wine was amazing, the food was spectacular and the atmosphere was awesome. It felt like we were in the 20s! Afterward we took a stroll through the park downtown and ended up next to the waterfall. George got down on one knee, asked me to marry him and I said yes!

I'd include a photo, but I am on the wrong computer and they are readily available on Facebook anyway! The wedding won't be for at least 2 years, most likely longer, so don't stress if you don't get an invite soon

The Newest Victim in the Economic Crisis

It's taken me awhile to decide to write this post. I don't know if it is embarrassment, a desire to avoid questions or just a combination of both. Whatever my reasons, it's safe to say that I dread dealing with the problem and wish that I could ignore it. Out with it, I guess...as of last Tuesday I have joined the ranks of the unemployed.

The HSO ran into some major financial problems. We failed to meet projected ticketing income for our first three concerts in addition to poor budget spending by some departments. That left us $35,000 behind (only 3 concerts into the season), a cash flow difference of $250,000 from 07-08 and with 74% of our marketing budget spent. Even though none of these problems were my fault, guess whose position was created last? That's right, mine. The position I held was created 8 months prior to my hiring date meaning the position itself had a life of 16 months...compared to the 35 years some of the other positions have been around.

I admit I have been worried about my job since our opening weekend. I've kept tabs on the economy, I've noticed the spending trends in Huntsville and I knew we were getting hit pretty badly. I just thought I'd have more time. I was sure they'd keep me around for at least half of the season. Now I'm job searching for the second time since graduation, and I admit I feel a bit like a failure. It doesn't matter that it's not my fault, it still feels like somehow I could've stopped it.

I'm in a city with a surplus of jobs, jobs which I am completely unqualified for. All the arts/culture organizations are struggling. The economy is so bad that administrative positions are being cut. I refuse to sell something or work at a restaurant unless it's my last resort. Maybe I'll be less prideful when December rolls around and I'm still out of a job...

This is why I was acting a bit weird at Shelley's wedding and it is the reason I might be a bit distant during Homecoming. To be honest, I really don't want to discuss it. If someone asks me how work is going, I'll probably just lie and say "everything's great" and change the subject. Besides, I don't want to think about my unemployed status when I could be partying it up with my friends!

I know this post sounds all "woe is me," but I swear I'm doing ok. I'm a bit depressed, but nothing major. I still have a great guy, fabulous friends and a supportive family. My mom has even offered to pay me to come home and clean the house! Hey, it beats flipping burgers!

Minor Surgery and Major Rock!

Due to the awesome three day music festival surrounding my building dowtown, the HSO closed our offices on Friday. Hooray for a three day weekend, right? I started my long weekend with a trip to the doctor. I assumed I'd be getting some antibiotics for a persistant swollen lymph node under my right arm. Round one and round two of antibiotics worked well, but I still had a bit of a lump. The doctors decision...re-freakin'-move my lymph nodes. What!? I didn't even know you could do that. What are the repercussions of missing lymph nodes? Apparently none since you have bunches of them in each location. Needless to say I was unprepared for the surgery and a bit shaken up (translation, I cried like a little baby and couldn't stop shaking the entire time). I ended up with a few stitches and prescriptions for painkillers and the antibiotics I had hoped for in the first place. (Side note: codine and alcohol is a trippy feeling, my friend)

Despite a rather large bandage/dressing under my arm George and I continued our original plans to attend Big Spring Jam. It was AWESOME. The first night we were just 15 feet away from STYX. They were amazing live...the best act of the entire weekend. I would've spent the $45 (cost of a 3 day pass) just to see them. Unfortunately with such a great opening night, the rest of the weekend wasn't quite as amazing. We still had a great time seeing Kansas, Tantric, .38 Special, The Guess Who and Three Dog Night...but nothing compares to the mind blowing amazingness that was STYX. I was a bit disappointed in Three Dog Night. They looked like they could fall over at any minute. I hope someone had an oxygen tank on stand by! Conclusion: $45 well spent

Random Tidbits

  • My mutual fund was invested in Lehman Brothers. I don't know to what extent, but I do know that SUCKS!
  • Opening weekend was two weeks ago. Ike hit the Midwest about that time. Because I was so busy, I had no idea that anything had happened. By the time I checked in with my parents they had already recovered from losing their power for 3 days. I'm a horrible daughter...
  • Big Spring Jam is happening this weekend! That means over 40 bands including classic rock, rap, alternative, christian and country. The band I can't freakin' wait to see? Mother effin' STYX! I'll be doing the robot as I sail away, bitches! Anyone interested in joining George and I at said music fest should know there's a free place to stay and delicious beer awaiting you. Not to mention the chance to see STYX, Kansas, .38 Special, Three Dog Night, The Guess Who, Buckcherry, Tantric (all bands I actually care about), Gretchen Wilson, Cowboy Troy, Hinder, Blake Shelton, Kenny Rodgers, Shinedown, and more (all bands I could care less about).
  • If you haven't sean the SNL Palin/Hilary opener, you must do so. "I can see Russia from my house!"
  • I will be up to the Haute for THE WALK in October! My tolerence levels may be down, but I'm still a champion!
  • This fall will find George and I glued to the couch more often then not...so many great TV shows are back! Did you see the Heroes episode last night? It was worth the crappy season ending. I guess Mrs. Petrelli's super power isn't being a super bitch afterall...
